ACGIH
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists publish many valuable resources. The Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices (TLV’s and BEI’s) is a must-have for the practice of Industrial Hygiene. In addition to recommended limits for chemical exposure, there are excellent recommendations for physical stressors, such as heat, noise, LASER’s, and many other forms of non-ionizing radiation.
The TLV’s have a great advantage over OSHA PEL’s. OSHA is required to go through a lengthy promulgation process in order to change the PEL’s. The ACGIH, however, can respond quickly to change TLS’s as better scientific evidence becomes available.
NSC
Among many other worthwhile projects, the National Safety council publishes several very important texts. Highly recommended is the three-volume Accident Prevention Manual series.
ANSI
The American National Standards Institute is possibly the most prolific standard-setting organization. They publish standards for everything from Analysis of Body Fluids to Z-Magnification of Atomic Force Microscopes. In between are many safety-related standards such as for impact-resistant safety glasses and hard hats.
SIRI
Vermont Safety Information Resources, Inc. are true to their name. They are indeed a great resource for safety information. SIRI maintains a collection of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s). Be sure to bookmark this page. You will likely return to it often. |

Certification
Professional certification is arguably the single most important consideration when selecting a consultant to provide contract services, or hiring an individual to be responsible for Safety and Health in your workplace. Certification is usually granted only after passing a standardized exam. Most certifying organizations have requirements for education and work experience in the field before candidates are eligible to take the exams. Most certifying organizations also require adherence to strict codes of conduct, written codes outlining professional ethics.
Eligibility requirements and the difficulty of exams (and passing rates) vary greatly among different certifying organizations. Before hiring a Safety and Health professional, the employer should become familiar with the requirements of the organizations which granted certification to the candidate.
